Titanium carbide ceramics are typical transition metal carbides. Its bond is composed of ionic bonds, covalent bonds and metal bonds in the same crystal structure, so TiC has many unique properties. The structure of the crystal determines the basic characteristics of TiC with high hardness, high melting point, wear resistance and electrical conductivity.

1. Multiphase materials: Titanium carbide ceramics are superhard tool materials. TiC can be made into various types of composite ceramic materials with TiN, WC, Al2O3 and other raw materials. These materials have high melting point, high hardness and excellent chemical stability. A preferred material for cutting tools and wear parts. Titanium carbide-based cermets are used for the cutting of high-speed wire guide wheels and carbon steel because they do not have crescent-shaped wear and steel and have good oxidation resistance. Multiphase ceramic tools containing titanium carbide have been widely used.

2. Coating material: Titanium carbide as a surface coating is a very wear-resistant material. Some of the strong carbides are plated on the surface of the diamond by physical or chemical means to form metals or alloys which, at high temperatures, undergo an interfacial reaction with carbon atoms on the surface of the diamond to form stable metal carbides. These carbides not only have better bonding with diamond, but also are well infiltrated by the base metal, thereby enhancing the adhesion between the diamond and the base metal. By depositing a layer of titanium carbide film on the tool, the tool life can be increased several times.

3. In the research of nuclear fusion reactor, titanium carbide coating material and (TiN+ TiC) composite coating material, after chemical heat treatment, the anti-mite permeable layer formed on the surface of titanium carbide is resistant to hydrogen ion irradiation and resistance. Temperature gradient and thermal cycling.

4. In addition, titanium carbide can also be used to make crucibles for melting tin, lead, cadmium, zinc and other metals; transparent titanium carbide ceramics are also good optical materials.
