Cobaltous chloride, chemical formula CoCl2. It is pink to red crystal and anhydrous is blue. It is slightly deliquescent and soluble in water, ethanol, ether, acetone and glycerol. Used for analysis reagent, humidity and moisture indicator, ammonia absorbent.

Cobalt chloride is prepared by the interaction of sulfoxide chloride and cobalt chloride hexahydrate. 20G fine CoCl2.6H_2O is put into a round-bottom flask, 50 mL of newly distilled sulfoxide chloride is added at room temperature, SO2 and HCl are released immediately. After the foaming stops, a reflux condensation tube is installed on the flask, and the mixture is refluxed for 1-2 hours. Then the reflux tube is refilled into a distillation device, and the surplus sulfoxide chloride is steamed by blowing dry nitrogen under reduced pressure. Distillate.

The flask containing the product is immediately moved into a vacuum dryer containing potassium hydroxide and stored in it for at least 12 hours to remove the residual sulfoxide chloride.

Finally, in a dry operating box, the product is transferred to a suitable container and fused to obtain the finished product anhydrous cobalt chloride, which should be a blue powder solid.
